Starving people of Khipro whose homes were washed away in ‘record floods’ given food and mosquito nets

On 11th September we reported on the devastation caused by the recent deluge in Pakistan on the village of Khipro in the Sindh (click here).

Due to infrastructure damage and constant monsoon downpour it has been unsafe for our officers to reach families affected in this village.  However on 16^th September BACA finally were able to reach this beleaguered village.

With the help of Pastor Paul we were able to provide food, mosquito nets and pray with families.

Though Pastor Paul and his team live in Sindh they still had to journey a treacherous 67Km distance from Behrani to Khipro.  Temporary bridges had to be crossed and various locations had to be avoided due to flooding or potential flooding, while the rain still fell.   Our team tell us that it was global prayers that enabled them to reach this community and have described some very worrying moments.

Pastor Paul, explained the situation, he said:

“No food supplies have reached this village from the Government or any NGO.

“It would have been hard for anyone to get across to this community as they are so remote. 

“Roads were in a bad condition often with some flooding.

“Bridges that were broken had makeshift routes or long detours that had to be taken – this often pushed us into flooded areas.

“We were determined to make it and to bring help to this community and by God’s grace we have been able to do so.”

Christian and Hindu families survived by selling any livestock and jewelry that had survived the floods. Many had borrowed money from their Muslim Landlords to feed their families and children a common practice, that has served to exacerbate their indebtedness.

Their mud homes are still surrounded by stagnant dirty water and fears of Malaria increase as mosquitos numbers have grown. To curb the potential spread of Malaria BACA has distributed mosquito nets to all 30 Christiana and Hindu families.

BACA have also provided a months supply of food rations which we hope will provide them with the ability to feed themselves till they are again able to cultivate land or find others types of employment.

We have been providing similar support in other Christian enclaves affected by the floods across Pakistan.

We have also distributed Mosquito nets and food in Nowshera in the state of Khyber Pakhthunkwa, in several villages in Quetta and in Rajanpur
